Sonny Zhou - Asia’s top model by Vogue

The Rise of a Mainland Fashion Model

As the first model from Mainland China signed by IMG Models Management (New York), Sonny Zhou is one of only a small handful of Chinese fashion models to consistently work in the overseas fashion capitals of New York, London and Paris.

Recognized as one of Asia’s top models by Vogue (China) and the Asahi Shimbun (Japan’s leading daily), the 6'0"feet tall Shanghai-born beauty has broken through a number of barriers to rise on the international stage. Fluent in English and several Chinese dialects, Sonny has worked on major ad campaigns for L’Oreal (New York), Revlon (New York), and Shanghai Tang (Hong Kong). Her work in the Greater China editions of Vogue, Elle and Bazaar, among others, has won industry raves, with top fashion editors, photographers and designers clamoring to work with her. On the runway, the 23 year-old stunner radiates sex appeal and star quality, while her editorial work reflects an intuitive understanding of body language and stylized movement. She loves the camera, and the camera loves her.

Sonny’s career began to take off in 2003 when she was cast in a locally produced TV commercial for Electrolux refrigerators. A string of major runway shows in Shanghai and Beijing, for the likes of Gucci, Ferragamo, Lanvin Vera Wang, Shanghai Tang, Diesel, and Paul Smith, followed, as did the frequency with which she appeared in leading fashion magazines. She became a regular feature in Shanghai and Beijing fashion weeks, her image invariably leading off the ensuing coverage in the press.

In early 2004, a Singaporean photographer and agent, Chuan-do (Ave. Management), took an interest in her career and, after bringing her to the city-state for a series of photo shoots, successfully introduced her to IMG. After a number of unfulfilling relationships with local Shanghai agencies, Sonny had finally received the professional support to cross over to Western markets, as her new management team immediately recognized her enormous talent.

With a highly developed sense of humor and a professionalism that belies her youth, Sonny has the energy and character to excel in what is one of the toughest industries in the world. Her knowledge of the market, developed over the course of her early career in the rough and tumble terrain of China’s nascent fashion industry, has equipped her with the ability to overcome obstacles and remain confident in her ability to dazzle.
