The September Issue

The September Issue won the Grand Jury Prize for Excellence in Cinematography at the 2009 Sundance Film Festival.

Anna Wintour, editor of Vogue for 20 years, is the most powerful and polarizing figure in fashion. Larger than life and more complex than fiction, Wintour embodies a fascinating contradiction of passion and perfectionism as she reigns over a dizzying array of designers, models, photographers, and editors. Director R.J. Cutler delivers a rare insider account of the nine months leading up to the printing of the highly anticipated September issue of the magazine, which promises to be the biggest one ever. He takes us behind the scenes at fashion week, to Europe and back, on shoots and reshoots, and into closed-door staff meetings, bearing witness to an arduous and sometimes emotionally demanding process. At the eye of this annual fashion hurricane is the two-decade relationship between Wintour and Grace Coddington, incomparable creative director and genius stylist. They are perfectly matched for this age-old conflict between creator and curator. Through them, we see close up the delicate creative chemistry it takes to remain at the top of the ever-changing fashion field. Cutler cleverly deconstructs the creative process as it plays out in the hollowed halls of Vogue, lined with racks of couture. In The September Issue, his access and insight are impressive and make us aware that he is offering us a privileged glimpse into a world many dream about but few see.

Dynasty: Homage to 80s Fashion

dynasty 80s fashion
My sister Diana of Style recently won a contest in Polyvore. The theme of the contest is Dynasty-the show.

The glamorous 80s or the Dynasty look made a comeback and is very obvious in the latest creations of famous designers. Said to be gaudy, sassy and bold.

Costume jewelry, hats, shoulder pads, the bigger the shoulders the better. You name it! Gold lame, brocade, silk, satin and metallic fabrics. The chunkier the better. Maximalism is the thing of the 80s--a decade of confusion and excess.

Jackets are now again worn pushed or rolled up to reveal the fine lining to add contrast and soften the stiff, masculine and intimidating look of its tailoring.

The Louis Vuitton and the Chanel quilted bag with gold chain is an 80s sensation.

Sandbox’s Digisoria: Exploring A New Dimension of Shopping

Virtually non-existent half a decade ago, shopping online is now the fastest growing form of retailing.

sandbox DIGISORIA Today, the web is brimming with online merchants leaving the impression that the Internet is a vast, freewheeling bazaar. But as online shopping and retailing continues to move into the mainstream, it’s important to take note of a few basics about to help grow your business or get your money’s worth.

Go for something different and unique
For both online merchants and shoppers, it’s best to offer and look at unique items. It may convenient to just click on the first thing that catches your eye, but there are a lot of fashion items available online offer a touch of personalization.

For Marge Abas of, it’s all about customizing according to her client’s preferences. “I create one-of-a-kind, hand made accessories and I make sure that what I have to offer my customers are unique in its own way,” she explains.

This idea is echoed by Valerie Mendoza and Jensen Gonzales of “We have a lot of competition online for customized footwear, but our specialty, which are portraits is something that we are known for, in addition to the quality of our products.”

core tempo shirts
VJ Eugenio and his partner Ryan Crisostomo of focuses on local customization on a broader scale. Known for selling musically inspired shirts, his attention to detail shows in the quality of his wares. “Our cuts are specifically made to fit the Filipino body type and all shirts are designed by my business partner and produce only a maximum of 50 per design.”

Price Competitively
In addition to the convenience, competitive pricing is a distinct advantage that makes online retailers stand out in the industry.

ronald mabanag jewelryRonald Mabanag, fellow online entrepreneur who started his business — with the support of his partner and family began by putting his creativity into handmade, jewelry designing, which he sells at a margin of the price such items go for in regular shopping malls.

“Products like mine usually range at around 5 digits when sold at malls—I wanted my accessories to accessible to a lot of people; to reach a diverse group of customers—a broader market but still maintain the same quality and aesthetic, with a touch of personalization,” he enthused.

Online Interaction
Being online means you are able to interact with your customers regularly. Questions can be thrown in by customers and are actually encouraged by online retailers as it helps build their credibility on the net and allows them to highlight the kind of customer service that you can expect from doing business with them.

proud mama store“Customers rely on feedback coming from customers. Build your reputation by having unique, high quality products and excellent customer service,” advises Rianna Trinidad, the online entrepreneur behind

Make the Most Out of Technology
The availability of the Internet and other technology certainly makes building an online business easier for aspiring entrepreneurs and shopping easier for online shoppers. But it’s best to get to know the tools of the trade, inside and out.

“Take advantage of the many resources available to make running your business easier. Social networking sites like Multiply and Sandbox, make brand building, product promotion and customer relationship management simple and easy,” asserts Trinidad.

It also presents new opportunities for retailers and convenience for shoppers. Whereas a Google search for fashionable items for instance may bring back no less than half-a-million hits, new web portals like Sandbox offer a more streamlined way of narrowing down your search by categorizing merchants into specific divisions.

Dubbed as Digisoria, a moniker derived from the name of the country’s famed bargain shopping destination and the concept of shopping evolving into the digital realm, Sandbox culls a comprehensive collection of online merchants from different categories to create an online classified ads section that catalogs products and retailers according to their niche allowing shoppers to find what they want or need faster and easier.

mysandbox sandbox smart media launch digisoria
Categories are meticulously divided for easy navigation through Digisoria, so that shoppers can quickly find the specific item they are looking for. For example, the fashion category is further divided into Clothes, Timepieces, Hair and Make-up, which lessens the hassle of going through page after page of posts before you can make your purchase.

This also makes it easier for sellers to reach their target market, since they can also leave a link to their homepage in their posts for interested buyers to see more of their merchandise. Other categories include Cameras, Videocams & Photography Equipment, Pets, Travel, Music, Sportswear & Sports Gear, Mobile Phones, Movies and Videos, Food & Snacks, House & Home, Bikes, Cars, & Trucks, Cooking & Baking , Toys & Hobbies, Books & Magazines, Audio-Video Equipment and Computers & Gadgets.

“Sites like Sandbox allows retailers like myself to take advantage of their streamlined system of online shopping. Everything is categorized; it’s specific and it’s niche. It’s a great concept and I’m really hoping to tap into a broader market,” shares Jen Advincula of, who is known for her made to order or custom made jeans and corporate uniforms.

Remember that at the end of the day, building a business online takes patience and determination. Align yourself with the right technology, be sure to interact and network—both online and off—and you will eventually build your credibility.

“Go into it with a basic plan. There’s no harm in starting small and building up your business from there,” shares Maegan Aguilar of

Neutrogena introduces Ultra Sheer Waterlight SPF 50+ facial sunblock
Ultra-lightweight Sun Care Protection that Puts Up a Fight

The summer season may be over but it doesn’t mean that women should let their guards down against the harmful rays of the sun. The sun’s ultraviolet (UV) rays that cause burning and premature skin aging are harmful all day long, be it under sunny, cloudy or rainy skies. And even when indoors, UV rays can still do damage by penetrating glass windows and reflecting from puddles and concrete.

Women who live, work and play in the city, now have the ultimate ally in fighting the sun’s harmful rays with Neutrogena’s revolutionary, ultra-lightweight, everyday facial sun care product – the Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Waterlight SPF 50+. The new addition to the Ultra Sheer sun care line is a superior facial lotion that provides complete, long-lasting protection against UV rays with breakthrough and patented Helioplex™ technology. Helioplex™ assures women that their daily facial sunscreen is stable and protects them from both UVA rays, which cause premature skin aging, and UVB rays that burn the skin.

Achieving that ultra-lightweight feel

With Neutrogena’s revolutionary Dry Touch technology, the Ultra Sheer Waterlight SPF 50+ boasts of an ultra-lightweight feel that does not leave a sticky or greasy feeling. Its fluid texture also allows one to spread the lotion smoothly onto the face, leaving a clean, non-shiny and velvety finish, perfect for everyday use.

“The Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Waterlight SPF 50+ provides women with superior ultra-lightweight protection lotion against UV and environmental aggressors for healthy, beautifully radiant skin. It’s fluid texture gives you a fresh, ultra-light feel. And combined with Dry Touch technology, it does not leave an oily or greasy feel. In fact, it is so light, when the sun screen is absorbed, it feels like there you have nothing on,“ explained Gabriel Roxas, Neutrogena brand manager.

Even if it is so light, it is still ultra-powerful and effective, with it’s SPF 50+ shielding skin from 90%-95% of UVA/UVB rays. It provides women with superior protection against darkening and signs of premature aging. And because it works and feels like water, the product ensures the skin is hydrated for soft healthy skin.

With a combination of anti-oxidants, including Vitamins C and E, the Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Waterlight SPF 50+ also protects skin against free radicals and oxidation that are induced by exposure to the environment. It is the perfect everyday shield, and women will not even feel it’s there. Neutrogena’s newest facial sunscreen is also oil-free and non-comedogenic, so it will not clog pores or cause breakouts.

Everyday skincare essential

With the ever-changing weather patterns and the growing concern for global warming, it is important that we take precaution from the striking heat of the sun, especially from its harmful UV rays.

Whether indoors or outdoors, women need to protect their skin from the sun. In fact, it is when the sun is not shining its brightest, like in the early mornings and late afternoons, that women need most protection because skin-aging UVA rays are strongest. When mid-day strikes, at approximately 10AM to 4PM, sun screen is also needed because UVB radiation is hard at work burning the top layer of the skin and worse, may lead to skin cancer. And while most people think that there is no need to apply sunscreen on overcast days, dermatologists now know that 60-80% of UV rays are able pass through clouds and reach the surface, or one’s skin.

So stay protected everyday with Neutrogena’s Ultra Sheer Waterlight SPF 50+ and get that all-day sun protection that is ultra-light and ultra-effective! To achieve best results, apply daily to face and neck 15 to 30 minutes before sun exposure. For added protection, reapply after heavy perspiration, towel drying or extended sun exposures.

The Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Waterlight SPF 50+ is available in leading beauty and personal care stores, department stores and supermarkets nationwide, with a suggested retail price of PhP 460.00.

A visit to Trilogy Lifestyle Boutique

Last Saturday after the VNC blogger event I decided to drop by Trilogy Lifestyle Boutique at 110 Alvion Center, Rada St, Makati City. Trilogy is the latest hang out and place to shop and eat.

The interior of the place is so cool. Contemporary to minimalist. I love clean wood grain finish that compliments the radical and hip designs of the clothes and accessories they sell. It is hip, young and a breath of fresh air from all the retail stores that I've seen here in the country.
