ly-ar martinez editions revealed fashion designer student

His inspiration are dark, anime and unconventional stuff. He doesn't care if he became famous or not. What matters to him is making clothes. Runway2Reality interviews Ly-ar Martinez, as he tells us about fashion and personal style. How should it be out of the box and beyond the norms.

Name: Ly-ar Martinez

Background: Studies/Occupation/Industry/ Company:

Fashion Design Student

Describe your Personal Style, Inspiration and Fashion/Design Philosophy.

My style is very dark, I never wear anything colorful. I get my inspirations from music I listen to, anime's I watch, and con's I attend.

What made you decide to take fashion design?

Ever since high school, I loved fashion. In my entire school I was the only one who decided to take fashion design.

I want to make clothes, I don't care if i get famous or not. As long as I know I love what I'm doing.

What do you think is the biggest misconception with student designers?

Some people think some fashion students just took fashion designing just to get famous and be known in this industry. On the other side don't believe this, I believe student designers here are very talented and creative when it comes to designing.

Local and Foreign Fashion Designers you admire.

Locally I love the designs of Dax Bayani, Alcs Porras, Gerry Katigbak, and lot more...while i go crazy over designers like H.naoto, Vivienne Westwood, John Galliano, & Jean Paul Gaultier

What is you inspiration for the collection that you'll be presenting at the upcoming Editions-Revealed?

My inspiration For the coming Editions is Japanese Rock inspired, combined with androgyny and grunge.

Some are saying that student designers should not showcase fashion shows or to the public. For they need more experience and what not in the industry. What can you say about that?

I guess it's a 50-50 for me, it's a good opportunity to showcase your collection, even though you are still a student. In this way: you know how it's done, what to do, how it works and so on. This will also be a good training for us student designers, by the time we graduate, we are already equipped with experience and the know hows of the industry.

What do you think are the challenges facing young/upcoming designers?

The Fashion Design Student population is getting bigger and bigger here in the Philippines. And I think not everyone will make it on top. We really need to make our own mark and make a name for ourselves.

What do you think Philippine Fashion needs?

Edginess. Because everything here's kinda boring. Especially when I am walking in malls, only 2 out of 10 is wearing something out of the norm.

Complete the sentence:

If I am not a fashion designer...
I'm going to die, joke. I'll be a stylist or a photographer.

Fashion for me art that you wear.

When It comes to fashion, Filipinos need...more edginess, and should not be scared to express themselves through their clothes.

Ly-ar Martinez will be part of Editions Revealed this coming October 8, 2009.
